EZEMONYE 3There is a great deal of fight among powerful interests in the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency over who to represent the area in the electoral dispensation.

Current occupant, Mr. Chidi Wihioka, is said to have fallen off the favour of the leader of the party in Rivers State, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and so might not most likely enjoy his support to seek a return. However, those who support Wihioka have taken to the social media to sing of his acclaimed qualitative representation and how he deserves re-election. But Mr. Wihioka, described as “generally unpopular” in the area, needs more than social media campaign and photo shoots to retain the party’s ticket, and eventual triumph at the election.

The latest to join the fight for the Federal legislative seat is Mr. Ezemonye Ezekiel-Amadi, a former Commissioner for Land under the administration of Amaechi.

Ezekiel-Amadi, to show his seriousness to the ambition, took what a source called “the first correct, political step” by informing Mr. Amaechi, and sought his consent. Though Ezemonye-Amadi could not secure a pledge of support from Amaechi, The Neighbourhood gathered that both men had met in London earlier in the year. It was during the meeting that Ezekiel-Amadi made his intention known to Amaechi, seeking to know however, whether the Honourable Minister of Transportation had zeroed-in on anyone for the ticket.

A source familiar with the London meeting told The Neighbourhood that the atmosphere at the meeting was cordial even as Amaechi told Ezekiel-Amadi that he had no particular person in mind but would support whoever emerges through the party primary.

Back home, Ezekiel-Amadi launched his consultations with party and political leaders in the area but returned to Amaechi about two weeks ago where he reiterated his ambition but still asked whether the Minister had decided on anyone. Amaechi was said to have maintained his earlier position of non-support to any particular aspirant. It was after the second meeting in Abuja that Ezemonye-Amadi extended his consultations, declaring his resolve to take a shot at the seat. According to sources close to him, Ezemonye-Amadi resolved that if Mr. Amaechi decides to support any candidate before the primaries, he would stand down his ambition to work with the choice.

The Neighbourhood could not speak with anyone on Mr. Wihioka’s side as he is not known to have a media aide. But the Media Aide to Ezemonye-Amadi, Callys Chuka Mbamaluh, confirmed the former Commissioner’s ambition saying, however, that it is still at the level of consultation. “I can confirm to you that he(Ezemonye-Amadi) is consulting and would declare his interest at the appropriate me. But as a loyal party man, he would abide by any decision reached on the mater by the party”, Mbamaluh told The Neighbourhood on Saturday.
